Are there tryouts for Junior Saltdogs League? No, there are no tryouts.  All players who register are placed on a team.
When do games start?  U6-U14 divisions may start games as early as May and run through late July.  U17 division will start games in June and run through late July.  If you have vacation plans, please inform your coach ASAP.
How many games are played?  Based on the number of teams and available fields, we reserve the right to adjust the number of scheduled games.  The projected number of games for 2010:
  • U6 t-ball:  11 games plus 1 game tourney
  • U8 coach pitch:  12 games plus 1 game tourney
  • U10:  14 games plus 2 game tourney
  • U12:  16 games plus 2 game tourney
  • U14:  18 games plus 2 game tourney
  • U17:  14 games plus 2 game tourney

Do players need to be present during registration?  No, but if you have a question about the proper shirt size, we recommend that they come to registration so they can try a shirt on.   We encourage coaches or parents to gather as much team information as possible and register together.  Each registration form must be filled out completely for each player.
What is the player registration fee?  The registration fee is based on the division and is subject to change.  It is set in January for the upcoming season.  To give you a general idea, for the 2010 season, the registration fee was $55 for U6 and U8, $70 for U10 and U12, $80 for U14, and $75 for U17.  In addition, each player must also participate in the fundraiser which for 2010 was either $53 or $60 per player depending on the option selected (see "what is the fundraiser" question below).

What is the fundraiser?  In addition to the registration fee, all registrants are required to participate in the Fundraiser.  You are given the option to (1) either purchase and resell Lincoln Saltdogs baseball tickets or (2) pay a Ain lieu of buy out@ fee.   Option (1) is a booklet of 10 Lincoln Saltdogs game vouchers that you buy at registration for $60. Each voucher can be resold for $6.  You would keep the money you receive which covers the entire cost of the fundraiser.  Or you can keep the tickets and use them for yourself and your family.  The game vouchers can be exchanged at the Lincoln Saltdogs ticket office for General Admission tickets to any Saltdogs home game during their regular season.  Tickets can also be upgraded (depending upon availability) to reserved seats at Haymarket Park.   Option (2) is the Ain lieu of buy out@ option.  If you choose this, it means you would like to pay the $53 fee to cover the fundraising cost and NOT receive the booklet of 10 Lincoln Saltdogs game vouchers.

What is the age cut-off date?  The player's age as of April 30th determines the youngest age division that the child can play in.  For example, if the child is 12 on April 30th, they ARE eligible to play in the U12 division; however, if they are 13 on April 30th, they are NOT eligible to play in the U12 division but must register for the U14 division.
Can I play in an older age division?  Yes, players are welcome to play up a divison.  However, parents should remember that if a child plays up, they will be playing with/against kids who are up to 2 years older than themselves and in some cases, players may be close to 3 years older if they have a birthday close to the age cutoff.
Can I play in a younger age division?  No, you can=t play in a younger division.  See the "What is the age cut-off date" question above.
Do we need to live in Lincoln to play in the Junior Saltdogs League?  No, players who live in surrounding cities and towns are welcome to play in the League.
When will we find out who our coach is?  U6-U14 players will begin hearing from coaches in the first part of May.  The U17 division starts later so players should hear from coaches in the first part of June.
When can we start practices?  Official team rosters and schedules will be handed out at the coaches meetings so there will be NO official team practices until after the coaches meetings.  U6-U14 coaches meetings will be held in late April.  U17 coaches meeting will be in late May or early June.
Where will games be played?  Until all schedules are finalized, we cannot commit to certain fields for any division.  Official schedules will be handed out at the coaches meetings.  Our League does not own any fields.  We rent venues from the city, state, and other private entities.  Fields currently used are listed on the AField Locations@ page.
What days of the week are games played?  Each year, the number of teams and available fields vary.  Until all schedules are finalized, we cannot commit to certain days for any division.  All divisions should expect to play on weekday evenings; Saturday morning, afternoon, and evenings; and Sunday afternoon and evenings.
How many players are on a team?  Traditionally, each team will have 10-15 players per team.  Roster sizes vary due to player preferences, available coaches, and proximity to your neighborhood.  Not all teams will have the same number of players.  Junior Saltdogs League reserves the right to add or delete players from any roster.
Are team pictures taken?  Yes.  The Junior Saltdogs League contracts with a professional photographer.  2010 season pictures will be taken by Champ Shots at Haymarket Park on Saturday, June 19th from 9am-2pm and on Sunday, June 20th from 1pm-5pm.  We will use composites as we have in the past so that you can take your child for pictures at a time during that weekend that is most convenient for you.  If you cannot make these two dates, you can go to Champ Shots studio (1510 South 1st Street - Suite #3) on June 15th or June 21st to have pictures taken as well.  Picture order packets will be given to coaches to distribute at the first team practice.
Can metal spikes be worn in the Junior Saltdogs League?  Metal spikes are only allowed in the U17 division.
What uniform do I need to buy?  Your registration fee includes a baseball cap and team t-shirt for each player.  Most players wear gray baseball pants which can be purchased at local sporting goods stores.  The baseball pants are not required in the U6 and U8 divisions.
How can I become a coach?  There is an area on the registration form for coaches to fill out or you can contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Coaches are volunteers that show a desire to teach players the fundamentals and provide a fun and positive atmosphere.
Where are the practices held?  Practice schedules and locations are up to the volunteer coaches.  Beginning May 1, 2009, the city of Lincoln started an online system to reserve practice times at many of the Lincoln Parks and Recreation softball/baseball fields.  There are two levels of fields available:  game quality and practice quality and reservations may be made up to 2 weeks in advance.

Game quality fields:  Holmes Park, Lewis Fields, Mahoney Park, Sawyer Snell
Practice quality fields:  40th & Hwy 2, Peterson Park, Pine Lake fields, Roper Park, Tyrrell Park
To access the website go to www.lincoln.ne.gov and use the keyword: fields.   There is a fee associated with reserving a field so you will need a credit card to finish you reservation.  Remember to print your receipt as proof of your reservation. It is recommended that you register with AMyInterLinc@.  When you register with MyInterLinc it will speed up the process of making a reservation and you will be able to view your history and reprint you receipts should you lose or misplace the original.   Although practice schedules are up to the coaches, once the season begins, we ask the coaches to limit the number of practices to one per week because they could be playing multiple games per week.
What is the proper size glove for my child?  The glove should be small enough so the player can move their arm and wrist easily when the glove is on.  The player should not bury their entire hand in the glove.  When worn properly, the bottom of the palm, near the wrist, is exposed.  Smaller gloves force the player to use two hands when catching.  Use the chart below as a guide when selecting a glove size:
